Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
